What guarding does a press brake actually need?
A compliant press brake needs point-of-operation guarding that stops the ram the moment a hand or arm crosses into the die area. On most modern CNC brakes that is a laser or infrared light curtain mounted along the front of the tooling, wired directly into the ram control so a broken beam halts the stroke, not just sounds an alarm. Mechanical barrier guards still exist on older machines, but they slow down setup on short-run jobs and most shops running mixed part sizes have replaced them with light curtains for that reason.
Check three things on any brake you are considering: whether the light curtain is integrated into the ram’s own safety circuit (not a bolt-on aftermarket unit), whether the curtain’s blanking zones can be reconfigured for deep-form tooling without a service call, and whether the guarding meets ANSI B11.3 for the tonnage class you are buying. A shop running a 175-ton brake with guarding rated for 60 tons is not actually protected at full tonnage.
Does a press brake need a two-hand control?
Yes, if more than one person can reach the point of operation during a cycle, the brake needs a two-hand anti-tie-down control, and OSHA’s press brake guidance (1986 interpretation letter, still the operative standard) treats a tied-down single palm button as a serious violation, not a technicality. Two-hand controls force both of the operator’s hands to be on the control station, away from the die, before the ram moves, and they have to release and re-press for every stroke.
On a job shop floor where one operator loads long stock and works alone most of the time, a foot pedal with a light curtain often replaces the two-hand station, which is faster for repetitive short-run work. The trade-off is real: a foot pedal takes one line of defense away from the hands and puts it entirely on the guarding, so if you go that route the light curtain calibration matters even more.
What is a hydraulic overload system and why does it matter?
A hydraulic overload or relief system senses when the ram is approaching a load beyond the brake’s rated tonnage and dumps hydraulic pressure before a die, a frame member, or a hydraulic line fails. Without it, an operator who miscalculates tonnage on a thick plate or a tight-radius die can blow a seal, crack a die holder, or in the worst cases crack the frame itself, and any of those failures happens with the operator standing at the point of operation.
This is a spec sheet item people skip past because it never shows up in a demo. Ask directly: what is the relief pressure set point, and is it field-adjustable or locked at the factory. A brake where the relief valve cannot be recalibrated as you change tooling and material thickness is a brake you will eventually run past its comfortable margin.

Is a used press brake safe to run without adding guarding?
No. A used press brake bought without light curtain guarding, even a mechanically sound one, is not compliant to run in most shops and should not be treated as ready to plug in.
